How to get to Amalienborg

The Metro to Marmorkirken, the walk from Nyhavn, and where the museum entrance actually is.

Updated September 2026 · Amalienborg Palace Tickets Concierge Team

Amalienborg sits in Frederiksstaden, between the Marble Church and Copenhagen harbour, and it is easy to reach on foot or by Metro. The museum is in Christian VIII's Palace, and the entrance is through the gate nearest Frederiksgade, the street that leads from the Marble Church to the square.

By Metro

The nearest Metro station is Marmorkirken, named after the Marble Church. It is on the M3 City Circle line and the M4 line, both of which run from Copenhagen Central Station, so from the station there is no change. Leave Marmorkirken towards the church and walk down Frederiksgade to the square.

From Copenhagen Airport, take the M2 line into the city to Kongens Nytorv and change there to the M3 or M4 for the one stop to Marmorkirken. Or walk from Kongens Nytorv, which takes you past Nyhavn on the way.

On foot

Amalienborg is a short walk from Nyhavn: head north along the harbour or up Amaliegade and you arrive on the square from the south. From Rosenborg Castle and the King's Garden it is about 15 to 20 minutes east on foot, the same direction the Royal Life Guard marches each morning before the noon change.

Between the palaces and the water is Amaliehaven, a public garden laid out in 1983 with a fountain and sculptures. It is free and a good place to wait if you are early for your slot.

Finding the entrance

The square is octagonal and the four palaces look almost identical, so it helps to know which one you want. The museum is in Christian VIII's Palace, the northwestern palace, and you enter through the gate nearest Frederiksgade.

Inside, go down one level to the museum shop and cloakroom. Backpacks and larger bags go into the free lockers, and pushchairs are left in the cloakroom. There is no space for suitcases, so don't come straight from the airport with luggage.

By car or taxi

There is no parking at the museum, and vehicles are not allowed on the palace square. Taxis and cars can drop off and pick up on Frederiksgade, about 50 m from the entrance.

That is also the drop-off point for visitors with limited mobility. From there, staff at the entrance help with the platform lift down to the shop, cloakroom and the lift to the galleries.
